I have started doing paintings in Ps and they are looking really good the only thing is I have to use a reference picture to take the colors from and what not. I want to be able to paint something from scratch like you do. If you could give me one word of advice what would it be?

Well - for sure.
There is nothing against using images as a reference. Everything that helps to get better is the right way.
Another good way is to play around with layer effect - such as soft light, hard light and so on.
Try to paint in a soft ramp on a separate layer and play with those effects. Sometimes happy accidents will do the trick, too.
Beside that, you could play around with the color balance tool, too. A great way to change the values for the highlights, mid-tones and shadows.
And the most important thing - keep experimenting!
